Digital tools, used when they answer a real question

Technology is most useful when it changes what the dentist can see, measure, communicate or plan. It should not be treated as proof that a treatment is automatically better.

Digital records

Clinical photographs and digital records can help document the starting point, compare proportions and communicate with a dental laboratory where laboratory-made restorations are involved.

In aesthetic cases, photographs may help discuss tooth display, smile line, colour and shape. They are communication tools rather than a guarantee that a digital preview will be reproduced exactly in biological tissues.

Intraoral scanning

A digital scan can record the shape and position of teeth without a conventional impression in suitable workflows. It may support restorative planning, communication and laboratory production.

Whether a scan is appropriate depends on the procedure and the information required. Digital does not automatically mean more accurate in every clinical situation.

Dental radiography

Different images answer different questions.

  • Periapical radiographs provide detailed local information around individual teeth and roots.
  • Bitewing radiographs are useful for selected areas, including certain types of decay and bone-level assessment.
  • Panoramic radiography provides a broad overview of the jaws and dentition.
  • CBCT provides three-dimensional information when anatomy or spatial relationships need to be assessed in more detail.

Implant planning

For implant treatment, imaging should support the final restorative plan. A panoramic radiograph may be useful during initial assessment. Three-dimensional CBCT information is often relevant for presurgical planning when bone dimensions, anatomical structures or implant position need to be assessed in three dimensions.

The scan is part of the decision process; it does not remove surgical risk.

A 3D image is not a promise of certainty

CBCT can be affected by movement, metal artefact, field of view and device-related factors. Its grey values should not be treated as universally interchangeable with medical CT Hounsfield units for bone-density claims.

Digital tools improve information. They do not replace judgement.
