Health data and consent for international enquiries
Dental photographs, X-rays, CBCT files, medical history and treatment records can reveal sensitive information about your health. This page explains the distinction between information needed for healthcare and optional consent for additional uses.
Sending records for a preliminary review
If you choose to send photographs or existing dental records before travelling, use the contact route provided by the practice and send only information that is relevant to the dental question.
A preliminary review can help identify likely treatment routes and what still needs to be examined. It does not replace an in-person examination and it is not a guaranteed final treatment plan.
Healthcare processing and optional consent are different
Information needed for diagnosis, treatment, healthcare records, appointment administration or legal obligations may be processed under the legal grounds that apply to healthcare providers. Those uses are separate from optional marketing or publication choices.
You should not be asked to agree to publication of your image, story or testimonial as a condition of receiving ordinary dental care.
When separate consent may be requested
A specific optional consent may be requested for uses such as:
- publication of an identifiable patient story;
- publication of identifiable before-and-after photographs or video;
- optional marketing communication;
- another non-essential use that is separate from healthcare delivery.
The request should explain what will be used, where it may appear and how the consent can be withdrawn for future use where applicable.
Patient photographs and publication
Permission to take a photograph for clinical documentation is not the same as permission to publish it.
Where patient media is considered for publication, the practice must also comply with the healthcare-promotion rules that apply to international health-tourism communication. Publication must not turn an individual result into a promise for another patient.
Withdrawing optional consent
Where a use genuinely relies on your consent, you may withdraw that consent for future processing. Withdrawal does not automatically erase information that must be retained for healthcare, legal or record-keeping purposes under another lawful basis.
